There’s a variety of activities tomorrow at the Regional Rec Centre in Owen Sound, and for a Saturday, that’s not unusual
Mid-afternoon, the Owen Sound Cresent Club Attack Major Midgets will face the Dundas Blues in a Tri-County hockey game that’s about as regular as a regular season game can get.
The referee for the game will be Greg McArthur, and that’s not a major happening since ” Mooch ” has overcome his many limitations as a player and become an active and exceptional young referee.
Scheduled to work the lines is Greg’s brother, Kevin, who based on his recent professional hiring, surely isn’t doing this for the money.
And the other linesman will be Greg & Kevin’s father, Wilbur, admittedly the least gifted of the three McArthurs in any aspect of the sport.
I’m sure it’s happened before in other centres, where father and sons comprise an officiating unit.
But the family cycle takes another spin when you consider the 3 McArthur’s will appear from the Timber and Mabel McArthur Referees room on Saturday.
Named for the parents and grandparents, I understand that in his day, Timber McArthur too was a respected referee and a major builder and supporter of sports in the city.
And all of this family connecting climaxes under the roof of the new Julie McArthur Regional Rec Center, named for a niece, cousin and relative of the officiating crew.
Pretty unique.
