What was the greatest Stanley Cup Final of all time………….?
I ask this in light of a new book produced by author Eric Zweig and Firefly Books titled, ” Stanley Cup- 120 Years of Hockey Supremacy “.
Speaking with Zweig last week, the question was posed to author, and after a lot of thought, he concluded the 1971 Montreal Canadiens seven game series win over the Chicago Blackhawks was his selection.
The nature of the upset championship for Montreal backstopped by an unlikely rookie netminder in Ken Dryden factored in with Zweig’s youth at the time, were key factors in his selection.
Me ?
I went with the 1980 New York Islanders 6 game series win over Philadelphia, climaxed by the Bob Nystrom overtime marker.
Again, a bit of an upset, but the culmination of years growing from a doormat, through being denied on the doorstep of the Cup by the Leafs and Rangers, factored into being in my teenage years.
Obviously, the Greatest Stanley Cup of all time depends on your perspective.
And with this latest project from author Eric Zweig you can compare 120 Stanley Cups through the years, page by page.
