That was quite a sporting Sunday in Owen Sound as the city hosted a Provincial Championship and a Canadian Championship within hours.
At the provincial level, the St Catharines Saints won the Ontario Senior Lacrosse Championship, beating the Owen Sound Quantum Properties NorthStars 9-7 on Sunday night at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre. to sweep the best of 7 in 4 straight games.
For the NorthStars the loss is a double whammy as there defeat was far from one-sided, plus it marks the second straight year St Catharines has vanquished the Owen Sounders for the Clare Levack Championship.
The 2013 Lacrosse season is 8 long months away, which gives the NorthStars plenty of planning time to attempt to do to St Catharines what the Saints have done to Owen Sound.
Meanwhile, at Duncan McLellan Park on Sunday, the Owen Sound Brick Brothers Volkswagen Selects lost the Canadian Junior Men’s Fastball Championship Final 5-3 to Kelly’s Pub of Newfoundland-Labrador.
For Owen Sound this is the third time the National Junior Final has been hosted by the Selects and the first time they’ve advanced to the Championship Final.
A year from now, again what seems like a long time from now, the tournament returns to Duncan McLellan Park to be hosted by the Keady Jets, potentially leaving the Selects to concentrate on winning it all.
