The Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup Monday night dropping New Jersey 6-1 to win the 2012 championship in 6 games.
The Owen Sound connection for the Kings is pretty significant.
Trevor Lewis scored twice in the game 6 victory, essentially sealing the win twice, the first time making it 3-0 on the major penalty to Steve Bernier of the Devils and then making it 5-1 with an empty netter.
Lewis played one season for the Attack, 2006-07, when he scored 29 times and picked up more than 70 points.
Five years later, he’s a Stanley Cup winner.
In 2001 the first round draft pick by the Attack was Brad Richardson from the Quinte Devils, taken 10th overall.
In spite of missing most of a full season in 2003-04, Richardson scored 87 times during his time in Owen Sound and went on to play for Colorado and now L.A.
And while Richardson did not suit up in the finale, his contribution to the Kings and their playoff run will be well marked by his name on the Stanley Cup.
And finally, former Attack General Manager Mike Futa is also with the Kings, the co-director of amateur scouting, a position he’s held since departing from Owen Sound in 2007.
Lewis is from Utah, and if he’s been back to Owen Sound, I missed it.
Richardson by comparison, remains a periodic visitor at the Wilson home where he lived in Owen Sound.
And Futa through his scouting duties is a frequent visitor to Owen Sound and has confirmed he’ll return again this summer, with the Stanley Cup in tow
