The Superheat FGH Great Lakes Hockey Challenge was a success from every regard.
The 4 team university women’s hockey round robin tournament was staged September 30th to October 2nd at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.
The Regina Cougars, Lethbridge Pronghorns, Guelph Gryphons and York University competed over 3 days in a format that was won by the Pronghorns who went 3 & 0 in the head to head competition.
Earlier this week, the organizing committee announced it would donate $5,282.73 to the Davidson Centre Revitalization Fund as a result of the tournament.
In making the announcement, the committee announced the Great Lakes Challenge will not become an annual event, but could run every other year with a mandate to attract the best university women’s hockey programs in the country.
Four teams, 1 town, 1 venue, 1 weekend and $ 5,000 towards that venue as part of the fundraising initiative.
Good for Kincardine, and truthfully, this is a great blueprint for many other communities, big or small, in our region to try and duplicate.
