It’s nice to have options & opportunities, and for Ian McKay of Saugeen Shores, there’s no shortage of opportunities when it comes to lacrosse.
Most significantly of late, McKay was selected to play field lacrosse for Canada’s National Under 19 Field lacrosse team.
In July, McKay and his Canadian team mates will be in Finland for the World Under 19 Championship.
McKay admits the Canadian team will not be the favorites at the competition, as the American entry, with a long history in the sport, is easily the oddsmakers choice.
Which begs the question, how does a guy from Saugeen Shores make Canada’s Field Lacrosse team ?
Box lacrosse I can understand, since there’s a lengthy connection to the sport here in Owen Sound.
But Field Lacrosse ?
There’s no Minor system. There’s no high school program.
Still Ian McKay has advanced through tryouts and training camps to make a National Team for an international field tournament.
Plus, in 2013 he’ll be off to the University of Vermont on a Field lacrosse scholarship.
For Ian McKay of Saugeen Shores it’s nice to have options and opportunities.
I’m Fred Wallace
