It’s too bad I’m aging and prone to forget what once were easy to remember aspects of sports.
For example, I can’t remember what year it was, but one of the best games in any sport I ever saw in this region, was a CWOSSA Football game at Port Elgin between the Saugeen District Royals and the Bluevale Knights.
Saugeen dominated the first half and built a huge lead, it might have been 28-7, but the Royals ran into some injury obstacles by the half.
During half time, and this I’ll never forget, Bluevale’s mascot, Norm the Knight, fought Saugeen’s mascot, Pete the Pirate, in what was definitely not a pre-orchestrated act designed to entertain the fans- this fight was more real than the UFC.
When the teams returned for the second half, Bluevale utilized one play, & one play only, and handed the ball to to their bashing running back, Craig-somebody, who singlehandedly carried the ball & his team to a stunning come-from-behind victory.
I consider it to be the greatest individual performance I’ve ever seen in a team game, high school or otherwise.
To me, win, lose, and individual performance aside, that game will always represent how much quality sports and sports entertainment exist right in our own back yard.
Tomorrow afternoon, the Saugeen District Royals will host JF Ross in a CWOSSA semifinal and the potential exists that game will be every bit as good as the one from when I can’t remember.
I do know game time tomorrow is 2 pm at SDSS
