For Canada Day, the Martin Prosperity Institute developed an index using a blend of 8 key Canadian metrics to determine what they call the ” Canucky-est City ” in the country
For 2011, the Canucky-est City is Moncton, New Brunswick. Good for them.
Owen Sound finished second.
And while I think that rating is terrific for the city, there’s also an irony with us being number 2, because, from a sports standpoint, we have TWO of everything, sometimes more.
In the summer, on any given night, both of our soccer teams in the York Region League, Grey Motors United & the Strikers, could be in action.
At Duncan McLellan Park, you can almost always find two Owen Sound Selects fastball teams competing.
Maybe it’s the Verge Seniors or the Brick Brothers Juniors.
And if not that combination, then, as illustrated by the recent OASA Championship, it could be Brick Brothers & the Owen Sound Bluewater Juniors. Or Midgets.
While not in Owen Sound, close to Owen Sound, there’s two auto racing tracks; alphabetically- Sauble & Varney.
In Owen Sound we do have two curling clubs.
Okay, we have 3 high schools competing in Bluewater Sports, but you get the theme
When the puck drops in hockey, take your pick any night of the OHL Champion Attack or the historic Owen Sound Greys franchise.
We all know that Owen Sound is small city, yet, a small city with very big aspirations, certainly in sports.
Maybe that’s why we have two of everything sportswise. Maybe that’s why we’re # 2 when it comes to the Canucky-est City in Canada
