What a Canada Day Weekend in these parts, weatherwise, and otherwise.
To a certain extent, I spent the weekend indoors, sort of, as I was at the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Junior Championship Tournament at Duncan McLellan Park.
While the organizing committee can’t take credit for the weather, just about everything else they oversaw for the event went off without a hitch.
When the final out was made, the Owen Sound Brick Brothers Volkswagen Selects were the cream of the 14 team field, beating a talented Napanee Express entry 6-1 in the Championship Final.
Brick Brothers went 4 & 0 at the tournament, starting with a tighter-than-the-score-would-indicate win over Napanee Shoeless Joe’s. followed by mercy rule victories over the Tavistock Athletics & Linwood Chiefs, sending them to the final against the Express.
Napanee’s path to the final was somewhat curious, as they totally underestimated Owen Sound’s other entry, the Bluewater Selects and dropped their first game.
The Express then ran off 5 straight wins to get to the final, but fell behind early against Brick Brothers and never recovered.
The finalists, along with additional Ontario entries, now advance to the Canadian Junior Fastball Championship Tournament in Napanee next month, and while the competition may be better, I’d be surprised if the weather is better.
