Boy, when I miss or short change a story, I do it in a big way.
I say this in response to a piece last week in which Rob Hellyer of Lion’s Head and Alex Morrow of the Saugeen District Royals were given precious little attention for remarkable results, results that were overshadowed by the unprecedented success of the Owen Sound Attack.
It’s understandable, but by the same token unfortunate.
Interestingly enough, Alex Morrow, a Grade 9 student at SDSS, burst back into the news last week, winning all 3 of the events she entered in the Midget Girls Division at the CWOSSA Track & Field Championship in Kitchener.
Morrow garnered gold in the 80 metre hurdles, in the 300 metre hurdles and in the Long Jump.
All of which prompted a call from Bayshore Broadcasting.
At the other end of the line was a refreshingly sincere young teenager who has worked very hard at her craft and to a certain extent surprised herself with the staggering success.
Morrow, who began her track days as a middle distance runner, displayed something that caught the attention of coach Earl Farrell who shifted her to the hurdles and in the process developed a performer who would best Farrell’s all time star pupil Donalda Duprey, setting a Bluewater record in the 80 metre hurdles.
Keep in mind, this is Donalda Duprey, Canadian Olympian in the 400 hurdles that we’re talking about.
Are the Olympics a reality for Alex Morrow ?
She softly giggled and related there’s a lot of time and a lot of work to be done before that could become a possibility.
Still, Alex Morrow remains a local athlete to watch with interest, likely never to be shortchanged in media attention again.
