There are times when you wonder if you aren’t missing the really big story.
I’m not referring to the Owen Sound Attack because everybody is talking about the Attack- in fact, to their credit, it’s impossible not to talk about the Attack, so we can’t be missing anything there can we ?
But is it possible that in the euphoria that surrounds the Ontario Hockey League Championship, we’ve shorthchanged sporting achievements that are every bit as big, if not bigger than the Attack.
For example, one of the neat aspects of the Attack victory is that it was achieved by a team from a small community.
However, Owen Sound is a metropolis compared to Lion’s Head.
But I don’t doubt for a second the Bruce Peninsula community is every bit as proud of Rob Hellyer who won the National Lacrosse League Championship with the Toronto Rock in his rookie season.
Furthermore, how about Alex Morrow of Saugeen District Secondary School in Port Elgin ?
Last week at the Bluewater Track & Field Championship, Morrow won the Midget Girls 80 metre hurdles, setting a record in the process.
Not just any record though, Morrow’s time eclipsed the previous mark, a thought to be unbreakable time, established by Donalda Duprey in 1982.
Duprey, who was also a student at Saugeen District, would go on to represent Canada at the Summer Olympic Games a decade later, so in my mind, Morrow’s record setting performance was really the big sports story in these parts last week.
