For the first time since 1990-something, I’m going to miss the Bluewater Track & Field Championship which begins tomorrow at the Davidson Center Complex in Kincardine and concludes Friday.
And make no mistake, I will miss it.
Over the course of 15 years, maybe it’s been longer, the Bluewater Meet has provided some of the greatest local sporting moments.
The 1999 Senior Boys 100 Final where Adam Kunkel of Walkerton nipped Liam Card from Saugeen District to destroy the existing record by 4/10ths of a second
The back to back years at the start of the millennium when Josh Cassidy of St Mary’s competed in the 1500 metre wheelchair races.
Watching a variety of athletes take a shot at some long standing records that may never be toppled.
Maybe it’s the nature of track & field that creates this drama, or maybe it’s just an appreciation of teenage athletes doing their best that stands out, but this has always been a terrific event.
I doubt that the 2011 Meet which begins tomorrow in Kincardine will be any different
I’m Fred Wallace
