The hockey season, a very long & trying hockey season, comes to a completion tonight for the Owen Sound Greys
The Greys host the Brantford Golden Eagles tonight at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre in the finale of the Midwestern Junior League’s regular season.
There will be no playoffs for the Greys this year, long since eliminated from contention with 4 wins and 11 points going into the game tonight against Brantford
Choose your adjective, and in fairness, they likely all apply to the club’s fortunes as Owen Sound will miss the playoffs by more than 20 points.
Having said that, I went to their game Wednesday night against Listowel and truthfully, while there were a variety of plays and sequences that were bothersome, there were a number of positives for Owen Sound.
I’m sure there are many nights when you could start and finish the positives for Owen Sound with Keegan Ackerland, and Wednesday night was no exception.
He’s a talented player; a scorer, a playmaker, a non-stop skater who works both ends.
Also, I think Attack fans could see Curtis MacDermid of the Greys see some time with the OHL club, especially with a depleted blueline.
MacDermid’s progress from September to February was solid
I liked Steve Wilken’s performance in goal and truthfully he deserved a far better fate on Wednesday against the Cyclones.
And most of all, I liked the lineup was filled essentially with the core of players who started the season.
It would be easy in a season such as this to quit, to bolt, to not compete, but there wasn’t a moment Wednesday when I didn’t believe the players on the ice were doing their best.
Game time tonight for the Greys & Brantford is 7:30
I’m Fred Wallace
