It’s early in the week and I’m sure there are a number of sporting highlights in the days ahead, but there’s no question SuperSpiel 29 is among them.
The Port Elgin Curling Club has hosted this event dating back to the early 80’s and with the passage of time, challenges on the ice and off have surfaced.
Still, a 29 year tradition and legacy for the sport locally and for the community is to be admired.
SuperSpiel 29 will have 24 teams, down from the heydays of 32, but still imposing enough to be both competitive and eventful
It’s a ” Pay As You Win ” format and for that, the organizing committee are exceptionally grateful to the many community sponsors and supporters who either donate cash or product and heighten the success of the weekend.
SuperSpiel is also an integral piece of the year to year operation of the Port Elgin Curling Club.
Monies generated through the weekend and through the years remain with the club and are earmarked for capital projects so when the ice making machinery needs upgrading or a roof needs repair, the money usually is available thanks to SuperSpiel.
SuperSpiel 29 begins Friday morning at 9 am and runs through the weekend, with the Championship Final set for about 2 pm Sunday afternoon.
Whether you’re playing to win, or just out for a good time, SuperSpiel 29 is sure to deliver once again.
I’m Fred Wallace
