The Career Horizons Grey Bruce Major Curling League wrapped up for the season on Sunday afternoon at the Chesley Curling Club.
The Curtis Cassidy rink from the Port Elgin Curling Club won the 2011 Championship and also won club bragging rights as they defeated another Port Elgin rink, Dave Cobean in the final.
The Cassidy rink which finished third in the regular season, won their 3 playoff matches in sequence to take the title.
The Championship rink includes Kate Hamer, Mike Hamer, and Adam Coburn
Meanwhile, the Cobean rink were like the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL last season.
Remember how the Flyers won a shootout on the final day of the regular season and managed to go all the way to the final before losing to Chicago ?
Same sort of story here for Cobean who qualified for the 8th and final playoff spot by winning a playoff qualifier over Lorne Johnson, and then scored two more playoff victories, including an upset of the # 1 rink in the regular season, Jeff Thomson of Chesley, to get to the finals
Truly, that’s an indication of how balanced the Career Horizons loop is, when a borderline playoff team can put it together for a week and nearly snatch the title
The Thomson rink of Chesley won the ‘B’ division while Owen Sound rinks skipped by Al Hutchinson & Don Bartley won the ” C ” & ” D ” Divisions.
Pretty good finish to a competitive year, with league organizers truly hoping for an expanded season next November which will include 16 teams, up from 12
