It has become tradition in this space at this time of the year to do the highlights of the year gone by.
Primarily because 2010 was a year filled mostly with delightful and special moments, I had a great deal of difficulty coming up with the absolute best moment of 2010.
However, when trying to come up with a highlight, I was struck by the incredible power of speech, when words are used to maximum effect.
My oldest cousin, Murray, passed away this month, and while he was far from a ” loner “, it’s fair to say he was the polar opposite from his radio cousin, and certainly from most of his siblings.
Yet the two testimonials delivered at his service were accurate & warm, and so comforting to everyone who knew & loved Murray Jones.
Earlier in the year, former Attack coach Mike Stothers pinch hit as the guest speaker for the OHF Peewee Hockey Banquet in Owen Sound.
Knowing Mike, I knew his speech would be far from flashy or polished, but true to form, the message from Mike was direct, honest & sincere, leaving a very positive impression on young and older in the banquet hall at the Bayshore that night.
And later, at the Owen Sound Minor Lacrosse Year End Awards Night, Jim Moss was the guest speaker.
Jim is one of the very rare athletes to play two sports, hockey & lacrosse, at the professional level, but the story he tells these days, pertaining to personal & physical recovery, is far more remarkable than any sports story.
And those were just some of the spoken highlights from 2010
Talk to you tomorrow.
I’m Fred Wallace
