This is Canada.
Our National sports are Lacrosse in the summer, and Hockey in the Winter.
But based on the news this week, you’d think our National sport, or at least the provincial sport for Ontario, is the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
I’ve been a UFC fan for almost a decade, and with a large amount of derision I criticized our provincial government for not allowing MMA in the form of the UFC in the province.
Finally, after seeing Montreal, Quebec and Vancouver, BC have massive successes from every vantage point, Dalton’s Gang at Queen’s Park capitulated and finally, the UFC was Ontario bound, a card set for April 30th at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Well the word was barely uttered when economic projections were spinning like Jonny ” Bones ” Jones.
UFC Canada President Tom Wright, speaking with Bayshore Broadcasting, fully expects $ 30- $ 40 million in economic benefits to Southern Ontario as a result of the April 30th card, which has yet to be formally drawn up in terms of who meets who.
These are great days for the UFC in Canada, as tomorrow night in Montreal, Canadian Georges St. Pierre, the UFC Welterweight Champion, meets Josh Koscheck for the title.
If Koscheck scores the upset this weekend, would there be a rematch in Toronto April 30th ?
I’m Fred Wallace
