November isn’t the most glamorous month on the calendar, but from a sports standpoint it certainly went out with some pop.
In these parts, there was big news yesterday when it was confirmed that Joey Hishon and Captain Garrett Wilson of the Attack were given the opportunity to compete for a spot on Canada’s National Junior Hockey team in 2 weeks.
We’ll deal with that as the days progress.
However, Canada’s biggest national sporting contest went down, almost to the wire, again this year.
The Grey Cup for the Canadian Football Championship was won for a second straight year by the Montreal Alouettes.
We don’t have anything at the professional level in hockey, basketball or baseball that comes close to rivalling the history and tradition of the Grey Cup.
And this year’s contest certainly had its moments.
Listening on the car radio on the road home from St Mike’s, it was apparent from the announcer’s presentation, that Montreal dominated until they missed a field goal.
Then Saskatchewan dominated, well into the second half, before the Alouettes got it turned around, sprinted to the lead and managed to hang on while the Riders tried desperately in the late going.
True, maybe it wasn’t the best Grey Cup in the history of the CFL, but until we have an equivalent in the other Big 4 team sports, as Canadians we should be happy our national football championship is generally a better final than the one south of the border.
