The 2010 Grey Cup will be played on Sunday at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, a bit of an irony since the host organization was one of 2 clubs who did not qualify for the Canadian Football League post season.
I have no doubt that Edmonton will be a terrific host site for the Championship Game, but the point is it would be a better league if there were more viable contenders.
I might be dreaming here, hoping for 8 competitive teams to be at, or around .500, but the CFL playoffs followed the form chart to the letter
In the East, Montreal wins the title again, taking the crown and advancing to the Grey Cup for a third consecutive year
That’s obviously to the credit of the team and the organization.
And in the West, Saskatchewan won the battle of the other two clubs with records above .500 taking the Western title with a 20-16 win over Saskatchewan.
Yes, because they were on the road, and yes, because their regular season record was sub Calgary, the Roughriders win over the Stampeders could be viewed as an upset
Similarly, you could argue the Argos win in the East semifinal was an upset, although both Toronto & Hamilton were 9 & 9 for the year.
Still, nobody likes contests were the outcome can be easily dissected and predicted and it’s certainly no shock the Alouettes advanced to the Cup and Calgary & Saskatchewan put on the best semifinal game
I like the CFL, every bit as much as the NFL, I just wish the competition was tighter.
Maybe Sunday in Edmonton at the Grey Cup Final
