Shows you what I know…..
About 10 months ago, I did a piece in which I suggested the Ultimate Fighting Championship had flatlined and the existing champions were here for the long run.
At the time, the champions, from Heavyweight down to Lightweight were Brock Lesnar, Lyoto Machida, Anderson Silva, Canadian Georges St Pierre & B.J. Penn.
When the piece aired in this space in late December, those 5 champions looked virtually invincible and it was my contention that without serious contenders, the UFC would enter a period of ho-hum.
Well, less than a year later, the title has changed in 3 of the 5 divisions, most recently last Saturday night when Cain Velasquez quickly thumped monstrous Brock Lesnar for the heavyweight tile
In lightweight, BJ Penn lost his title to Frankie Edgar and then lost the rematch
And in the light heavyweight division, Mauricio Rua defeated Machido, in fact many think he did it twice in the last year.
Furthermore, Silva, the champion with the longest reign, was less than a half minute away from defeat when he pulled off the desperation submission of Chael Sonnen.
With all of this unexpected turnover in the UFC, is it possible that Josh Koscheck will upset St Pierre for the welterweight title in December ?
