Time flies, doesn’t it ?
Rona Welsh called a while ago and is spearheading an effort to operate a Senior Ladies Fastball team in Owen Sound.
On air we got talking about it and it struck me that Rona was a member of the Leon’s entry that hosted the Canadian Women’s Fastball Championship Tournament in Owen Sound 10 years ago.
TEN Years !!! Wow.
Then I got reading the saga of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the less-than-sterling performance by Nazim Kadri during the Leafs training camp and pre-season, and something else struck me from 10 years ago.
At the turn of the century, Mark Jeanneret, then the Erie Otters broadcaster was telling me about the Leafs who had selected Otters in the first round of the NHL Drafts.
In the Fall of 2000, the Leafs LOVED Brad Boyes.
In the Fall of 2001, the Leafs LOVED Carlo Colaiacovo, but Boyes had fallen out of favor.
In 2003, the Leafs sent Boyes to San Jose in the Owen Nolan deal.
By November 2008, the Leafs deemed Colaiacovo was out of shape and he too was dispatched to St Louis in the Lee Stempniak deal.
Of course in 2009, Kadri was drafted 7th overall and everyone LOVED him, in fact, the media were perplexed when Kadri was sent back to London of the OHL.
A year later……..
Well, time marches on, be it Women’s fastball or the Leafs, but some things remain the same.
I’m Fred Wallace
