I’m way, waaaay, overdue on this, but in a week of Sterling Marlin and Senior Lacrosse Championships, I’m far too late, but still want to congratulate the Walkerton Wild on winning the Canadian Midget Fastball Championship.
On it’s own, that’s highly impressive, I mean how many Canadian Champions in Youth team sports do we have in our region ?
Yes, there are OMHA and OASA champions in our midst, but Canadian Champs, that’s truly rare.
Furthermore, the manner in which Walkerton claimed the title was almost storybook.
They finished second in their division thanks to an amazing late rally against Newfoundland-Labrador.
They beat the host entry from Startford in the ” double life ” game, knocked off previous nemesis Oshawa in the undfeated game and then beat Stratford a second time in the Championship Final.
The Wild had a strong third place showing at the Ontario Tournament here in Owen Sound in late June, and with the right additions through the pick-up process, they formed a squad that could be remembered for decades ahead as Canadian Midget Fastball Champions.
Congratulations to the Wild.
Quickly in other fastball notes, the ISC Championship Tournament begins this weekend at Midland, Michigan
Both the Owen Sound Verge Investment Selects and the Port Elgin Blue Devils are competing, both scheduled to play their first games Sunday afternoon at 2 pm.
I’m Fred Wallace
