The Owen Sound Attack are marking the 60th anniversary of the Owen Sound Mercury’s Allan Cup victory this year with a series of ” Mercury Nights ” and throwback jerseys for the warm ups.
Knowing that the Attack warm up jerseys are always utilized in a year long auction, it just struck me that the Mercury replica jerseys would be much sought after items this year, especially among family members of the original Mercury’s who still reside in the city and the region.
So at the Home & Cottage Expo, I ran into Charlie MacDonald, a terrific player in his own right according to hockey folklore, and I wondered if he had a Mercury lineup from 1950-51 since his brother, John, was a member of the team.
Charlie MacDonald came through with a lineup page from a Mercury Game Program , I assume from about 1953, and the names & numbers just flew off the page.
McReavy, Gillespie, White, Forslund, Grant, Hayward, Gilson, Burlington, Kazarian and more.
Just as interesting to me were the business card advertisements that surrounded the Mercury’s lineup.
Businesses & names that exist or aren’t that far removed from our memories; Scarrow Shoes, the Harrison Park Inn, Bill Gardhouse Men’s Shop, the Scopis and the Owen Sound Bowling Academy owned and managed by Ernest ” Nails ” Daigneau.
Amazing.
Equally amazing was the ad from CFOS which boasted local & district news THREE Times Daily plus TWO Sportscasts daily at 6:15 am and 11:05 PM.
Great memories as Mercury Days approach with the Owen Sound Attack.
