I want to go back to the 2010 Harry Kazarian Memorial Minor Lacrosse Tournament, staged in the region in Mid-June.
I said at the time that the event was good; very good.
Good for Owen Sound Minor Lacrosse with 3 teams advancing to their respective Championships.
Good for Owen Sound Minor Lacrosse as a fundraiser and as a signature event.
Good for the relatively new organizing committee who really did not falter at any aspect as far as I could see.
And certainly good for the city and the region economically, when you pack 40 teams of players and parents into the area.
Now the bad, at least as I saw it……
Almost every Championship Game ended with an incident.
An incident that ranged from stupid, to careless, to borderline criminal in nature.
Even though I never played lacrosse, I do appreciate the rugged nature of the sport, in fact, it’s one of the reasons, I like lacrosse.
But I have a large distaste for the incidents I saw on Championship Sunday at the Kazarian Tournament, from Peewee through Intermediate.
I might be overreacting here, and I stress this is certainly not finger pointing at the sport or at the local organizers who had zero chance to control the episodes, but it’s pretty sad when such a jewel on the annual calendar of local activities gets sullied in the manner it did this year.
I’m Fred Wallace
