Later this week, almost a dozen members of the Saugeen Track & Field Club will head to Moncton, New Brunswick for the National Junior Trials.
Coaches Jacqui West & Randy Millar will lead 9 Saugeen athletes to the meet which serves as both a qualifier for the athletes and a primer for the facility.
The winners this weekend get a return trip to Moncton in mid-July for the World Junior Track & Field Championships as members of the Canadian entry.
And with the World Juniors beginning July 19th, this weekend will be terrific for the organizers to assess the ability of the facility to host the World meet and also give them time to rectify any issues that may appear.
What’s interesting about the Saugeen Club and their group of 9 athletes is they are spread across the disciplines.
There are Saugeen runners, Saugeen jumpers and Saugeen throwers all scheduled to compete which speaks to the variety of opportunity that exists within the club.
And speaking of opportunity, six of the Saugeen athletes already have their post secondary academics & athletics lined up while three others are not yet eligible by age.
I asked Randy Millar, how many of the 9 athletes he thought would make a double trip to Moncton in July.
Randy Millar didn’t really know or want to hazard a guess, but he did stress the opportunity is exciting for the Saugeen athletes to rise from the National stage to the
World level.
