The Ontario Amateur Softball Association Midget Championship in Owen Sound was won by Mother Nature, who delayed games with rain on Saturday, suspended games later that night with a fog out, and then prevented the final 2 games from being played on Sunday by bringing rain from the bullpen again.
A valiant second place finish was turned in by the city groundskeepers, the organizing committee and the Owen Sound Brick Brothers Volkswagen Selects and their parents who assisted on several occasions in making the fields playable.
Oshawa ” BB ” were declared the tournament champions, but the comments from out-of-towners on the restoration work by the crew at Duncan McLellan Park left an impression.
Equally impressive was the results for the 3 Bluewater entries who took turns knocking each other out.
The Walkerton Wild went the furthest from the Bluewater League, getting to the final 3 before the event was canned by weather.
The performance by Walkerton gains them a berth at the Canadian Midget Championship in Stratford, which is set for August 1st to 6th.
Along the way, Walkerton eliminated the Brick Brothers Selects with a come from behind 4-3 win.
Brick Brothers in turn eliminated Wiarton in an emotional 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon.
There was a lot to like about the OASA Midget Championship……. aside from the weather.
