If you get the impression I’m grateful to the Bluewater District School Board, especially to those connected to the Athletics Association, you’re accurate.
With the school year winding down, I try to express my thanks to all of the coaches, all of the convenors, all of the people within the Bluewater system who go the extra mile to make sure we get advancers, results and follow ups on the various teams and athletes who live and play in our broadcast region.
Just this week, I had a terrific interview with Samantha Schmalz, a Southampton native & a graduate of St Mary’s High School in Owen Sound who earned a spot on the Ontario Under 23 Women’s Rugby team.
While surprised to get a call from the radio station, Schmalz ducked into a closet at work and proceeded to deliver a very enthusiastic explanation of why she loves rugby and why she loves the opportunity she has as a flanker for the Provincial team at the upcoming Nationals in Toronto.
In this case, the whole process was gift wrapped for me by Darcy Werger at St Mary’s, one of at least a hundred teachers and administrators connected with young athletes, one of probably a hundred teachers I deal with on a yearly basis, season to season, sport to sport, who give their time to make sure events run well and deserving performers get well deserved time in the spotlight.
Summer vacation is essentially here for the Bluewater Board, so I want to say thanks for exceptional service in the year gone by and eagerly look forward to the Bluewater Athletic activities in the year ahead.
I’m Fred Wallace
