Did I mention I like high school sports ?
One of the latest illustrations pertaining to the significance of athletics to a student body, if not a community, comes from Walkerton where the Lady Raiders won the CWOSSA ” A ” Girls Soccer title last week at Kitchener.
The win for the Lady Raiders means they’ll depart for the Sudbury region later this week and compete at the OFSAA ” A ” Girls Soccer Championship, which is being hosted in Hamner.
OFSAA appearances are rare for Walkerton District Secondary School.
For many years, the Raiders were classified as a ” AA ” school which meant in most cases their sports teams had to compete with larger schools, sometimes with twice the number of students from which to assemble their teams with.
As I understand it, over the course of time, only 2 teams from Walkerton District, a curling team and a Raiders Boys Basketball team 20 years ago, have ever advanced to OFSAA, so the Lady Raiders advancement to OFSAA Soccer is huge.
Furthermore, the clock is ticking on Walkerton District and somewhere on the short term horizon there will be a new school, likely with a new name, and Walkerton District will be no more, therefore, the Lady Raiders achievement could be historical in nature.
Good luck to the Walkerton Lady Raiders at OFSAA ” A ” Girls Soccer this week at Hamner.
I’m Fred Wallace
