I got my first look at the Owen Sound Brick Brothers Volkswagen Midget Selects last week and by & large, I was impressed.
You might think, ‘ come on, Fred ‘, since Brick Brothers dropped both ends of a Bluewater doubleheader that night against the Port Elgin Blue Devils.
But let’s have a little perspective here.
Let’s overlook the scores, which by the way were 15-6 & 10-4 for the Blue Devils, but let’s not overlook who the opponents were.
The Blue Devils were the 2009 ISC II Champions, and the roster they fielded in Owen Sound last week, was essentially the same one that captured the North American Men’s Fastball Championship last summer.
For the Owen Sound Midgets to hang in there, in both games, avoid the ” mercy ” rule in both cases, and to put up 10 runs combined over 2 games speaks volumes.
This is the Brick Brothers entry which will host the 2010 Ontario Midget Championships in late June, and I doubt they’ll see pitching as quick as Rob Fawcett and Matt Hamilton of the Blue Devils, nor face a squad as experienced and gifted as the Port Elgin outfit.
Is there room for the Brick Brothers Volkswagen Midget to improve ? You bet, especially defensively, but again a little perspective here, they’re kids.
But with a month still to go, a big tournament at Waterloo and a sequence of Bluewater games in front of them, the Brick Brothers Midgets should be very competitive when they host the Ontario Midget Tournament in late June at Duncan McLellan Park.
I’m Fred Wallace
