Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “.
With the Christmas Fund Broadcast just concluded and a coincidental temperature drop, all we need is a little snow and we’ll be in full Christmas mode.
Snow is a blessing or a curse depending on who you speak with, but for some our top athletes in the region, it’s the best time of the year.
Prominent Owen Sound skier Larisa Yurkiw launched her World Cup season over the weekend at Lake Louise in Alberta.
Her early results were certainly solid.
On Saturday in the downhill, Yurkiw finished 7th, missing a podium finish by 1/2 a second or so.
Sunday in the Super G, Yurkiw turned in a 14th place performance, hitting the line a little more than 2 seconds behind the race winner, American Lindsey Vonn
Yurkiw is back in our region for a day or so, anticipating snowpacked slopes in Europe for most of the next month.
Meanwhile, in Camrose, Alberta over the weekend, the first Haywood NorAm Nordic was staged.
Two skiers with strong ties to Georgian Bay Nordic competed and represented the club well.
In Senior Men’s competition, David Askwith was 15th in the 10km classic and 26th in the 16.5 K freestyle.
Meanwhile in the Junior Men’s Division, Julian Smith posted a 3rd place finish in the 10km classic and was 9th in the 16.5 K Freestyle.
Both Askwith and Smith are scheduled to compete today in the sprint classic, then head to Lake Vernon, BC for the weekend.
You might not like winter conditions, but for Yurkiw, Askwith and Smith…let it snow.
I’m Fred Wallace
