Port Elgin Blue Devil's Pitcher – Caleb Keeshig has a big win under his belt in New Zealand.
Keeshig who hails from Neyaashiinigmiing First Nation is a Canadian National Training squad pitcher, and had helped his Wellington team win the New Zealand National Fastpitch Championship last week.
The team had a 10-1 win over the North Harbour team in five innings with the local pitcher forcing six strikeouts.
This win was ten years in the making since the Wellington team since it last took the Fastpitch Championship.
Keeshig says he aspires to make the starting roster for team Canada. “I'm currently on the 40 man roster but have yet to crack the starting line up,” he says in an e-mail.
The ballplayer took the opportunity to go to New Zealand to play softball while Canada was in it's winter, and use it as an “off-season” training.
Keeshig says he’s going to continue to play in the Bluewater League, however, on weekends he will travel across Canada and the United States playing on a tournament team based out of Niagara which will be attend the International Softball Congress in Iowa, in August.
Following the ISC Keeshig hopes to play in the European Super Cup in Prague, Czech Republic from August 25th to Sept 3.
