Warren Sye Takes Lead at Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s Amateur Championship
Midland, ON (GOLF ASSOCIATION OF ONTARIO) – Mississauga resident and five-time Ontario Amateur champion Warren Sye delivered a two-over par 72 on Thursday to take sole possession of the lead at the Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s Amateur Championship hosted by Midland Golf and Country Club.
Sye, a member of the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame with two Canadian Amateur Championship titles under his belt, had an up and down second round performance with three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey amidst rainy conditions. His total score of 140 (68-72) gives him a four stroke lead over the field of Ontario’s best male amateur golfers age 55 and over heading into Friday’s third and final round.
Ridgeville resident Sandy Billyard carded the best round of the day with an even par 70 to move up the leaderboard into second place. The Hunters Point Golf Course member is looking to improve on his 2011 result where he finished tied for eighth. Billyard sits with a total score of 144 (74-70), four-over par.
2010 runner-up Alisdair Cayley of Burlington is in third place at six-over par with a two day total of 146 (75-71), followed by Rick Dodds-Hebron of Brampton and Tom Hodgins of Newmarket who are tied for fourth at seven-over par. 2010 champion Mike Jackson of Collingwood is tied for seventh at nine-over par, with 2011 champ Jim Morton of London tied for 24th. First round co-leader Guy Kohlmeier slipped down the leaderboard to 13th place after carding a second round 83 for a total score of 151 (68-83), +11.
Following play on Thursday, the field was cut to the low 60 golfers and ties, with the cut falling at a total score of 159. Final round action gets under way at 7:30 am, with players going off the 1st and 10th tees and the lead group of Sye, Billyard and Cayley set to tee off at 9:00 am.
The Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s Championship is contested annually and features Ontario’s best male amateur golfers age 55 and older. 2012 marks the 77th playing of the event, and the tournament serves as a qualifying event for the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, hosted this year at Le Griffon des Sources in Mirabel, QC on August 28-31.
