It is apparent that brooms and Winterhawks don’t mix.
For the fourth straight playoff series Saugeen Shores have taken a 3 games to none lead.
But for the third series in a row the Winterhawks have failed to sweep their opponents out of the playoffs.
The defending WOAA Senior Mens “AA” Champions — Tavistock Royals — avoided elimination by beating the Winterhawks 6-5 in overtime.
Around 600 spectators at the Tavistock and District Recreation Complex last night saw forward Wes Kropf bounce on a rebound and put it past Nick Goetz 4:51 into the first extra period.
Kropf had 2 goals and 2 assists in the game for the Royals who now trail the “AA” Championship Final 3 games to 1.
With the Winterhawks trailing 5-4 late in the third period, Brian Kazarian scored with 1:19 left to tie the game at 5 and send it to overtime.
Bill Monkman almost put the series away for Saugeen Shores early in overtime as he was open but couldn’t handle a goal mouth pass from Curtis Johnston and the puck stayed out of the net.
Darryl McKinnon led the scoring for the Winterhawks with 2 goals and an assist.
Curtis Johnston and Adam Weir also added goals for Saugeen Shores.
In addition to the 2 from Kropf, Tavistock got goals from Andrew Oesch, Mike Woodley, Jim Barlow, and Tyler Roth.
The Royals outshot the Winterhawks 40-33.
Game 5 goes this Friday night in Southampton.
