The new Head Coach of the Goderich Junior C Sailors plans a step-by-step approach to improving the hockey club.
Todd Goetz was hired a week ago to replace Larry Lane who departed at the end of the last regular season.
Goetz says he’s looking forward to evaluating player prospects and hitting the ice with them.
Goetz says he’s excited at the idea of instilling a structured approach to developing the team.
Goetz says the leadership provided by the Sailors’ Executive Board off the ice can be carried over to the team’s on-ice development.
Goetz says it’s time to forget the Sailors’ 6-and-30 record and sixth-place finish in 2008-09.
He says it will profit everyone to look positively at future opportunities and that the Sailors have a good core of talent around which he can build a competitive club.
Goetz cautions that any improvement likely won’t be apparent immediately when next season starts.
Goetz hopes to see improvement in 2009-10 but that sustained improvement that could lead to a Western Junior C Championship is likely up to three years away.
Goetz says he looks forward to working closely with General-Manager Ken Crawford in player evaluations and try-outs.
He believes Huron and Perth Counties have a rich pool of minor hockey talent from which to draw.
