Four members of the Hanover Police Services have been awarded Certificates of Commendation from the Governor General of Canada.
Police Chief Chris Knoll, Sergeant Rob De Groot, Constable Mike Comars and Constable Michael Boyko are all being recognized for their bravery.
On April 14th, 2015 the four officers were put to the test when responding to a call concerning a man who was screaming obscenities and throwing household items out of his second floor apartment windows to the street below.
The man became even more agitated upon police arrival and claimed he was in possession of explosives and a high powered firearm.
During negotiations the situation escalated when the man set his apartment on fire and the flames and smoke began billowing out of the windows.
At this point police managed to evacuate a family from the building, broke into the apartment and after a brief struggle arrested the man and put out the fire.
A portion of the 10th street was closed and police evacuated neighbouring businesses and residences overnight for public safety reasons until the OPP Explosives Unit could determine the area was safe.
Chief Knoll recommended his three officer for the Governor Generals Certificate of Commendation for their outstanding work.
The Governor Generals Office decided to add one more name to that list, Chief Chris Knoll.
All four officer say they are honoured to receive the commendation and are thankful that no one was killed or injured during the very volatile situation.
The suspect was arrested and convicted.
Knoll says it really was a team effort and credits West Grey Police Services and the OPP for their assistance in securing and safely containing the area.
