Grade 12 students from St. Mary’s High School in Owen Sound are not only getting a first hand look at history, but a first hand, hands-on look at their own histories.
They’re essentially creating an exhibit called “Canada: This is Who We are” that will eventually be on display at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton.
It’s all part of the students’ History Class.
The goal is research their own family histories and the connection to not only Bruce or Grey Counties and surrounding area but to Canada itself.
Museum Director, Cathy McGirr, says they’ve been able to help the students with various aspects of the project like research and creativity, especially with connections to Bruce County.
“Our Graphic and Exhibit Designer, Chris Irvin, actually went to the school late last year and spoke to {the students} about the different elements that they can include in their displays,” says McGirr.
The student displays within the exhibit contain various things and somewhat personal items like photographs, pertaining to each student’s individual family history.
“They’ll all be very personally connected to that student and their family,” says McGirr. “So lots of personal connections there for sure and obviously of an historic nature.”
The exhibit, “Canada: This Is Who We Are”, is only on for a short period of time from Thursday January 11th to January 19th, 2018.
