A control bylaw has been set in place for any proposed Medical Marijuana grow operations in Meaford.
Mayor Francis Richardson says the bylaw prohibits any grow-ops in the municipality until a planning study has been completed.
The review will outline land use policies to ensure any facilities are appropriately located and developed in Meaford.
Richardson also adds the study will investigate the risks and benefits of Medical Marijuana business in regard to the municipality.
The bylaw will remain on the books for a year, however Richardson says the comprehensive study should be back in several months.
He tells us when the document is done, the control bylaw will be revoked and Council will proceed depending on the results.
According to Richardson, the Medical Marijuana industry is a business and could potentially employ anywhere between 25-30 people.
He adds it’s a great way for Meaford to continue with their economic strategy.
Richardson tells us just like they did with cell towers and wind turbines, they will investigate the risks and hazards before proceeding.
He tells Bayshore Broadcasting News they will treat marijuana like other narcotics used for medical purposes, and this study will help do so.
The Mayor also says this is one of the rare occasions where the federal and provincial governments haven’t removed control from the municipalities.
