A rally in opposition to the Orillia’s monument to Samuel de Champlain is set for Canada Day.
After a refresh, it is set to be resurrected by Parks Canada this month.
According to the event’s organizers, the rally is being held to quote “help send the message that this genocidal monument and everything it represents does NOT belong in our community’s recreational spaces.”
The much debated monument portrayed the French explorer along with several other figures, including four statues of First Nations people beneath him with a plaque that said it was meant to commemorate “the advent into Ontario of the white race.”
The plaque has been updated as well as the monument itself, but the controversy over its history continues.
