Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau says the country’s military is preparing for a gradual withdrawal from Long term Care (LTC) homes in Ontario and Quebec and that the Red Cross will assume care at the remaining homes in Quebec.
Trudeau says the Red Cross will continue in that role until mid-September.
The Red Cross’s help will allow the armed forces to go back to their usual responsibilities as their help at LTC homes are needed less.
He also confirmed that during the transition phase, commitment to care will remain solid.
“We’re making sure that the military does not leave any situation until it has been stabilized,” he said, “And the Red Cross personnel are available to come in and keep supporting.”
As of today, the armed forces are still at one facility in Ontario and may leave there in the coming days, he said, once things are stable.
