It’s the first day back to school and that means school buses are back on area roads.
A reminder to stop in either direction when a school bus has its lights flashing.
If you don’t, you can be fined anywhere from 400 to two thousand dollars.
Police will also step up patrols in school safety zones this week.
OPP Sergeant Kristine Rae tells Bayshore Broadcasting News it’s important that everybody — especially drivers — pay extra attention on the roads.
She says students will be excited to get back to school and see their friends, and may not be mindful of safety when it comes to crossing roads or coming off of school buses.
Rae says drivers have to be extra diligent.
And she says it’s very important to know and abide by the “four-lane rule.”
She says when you see a bus stopped with its lights flashing, it’s important you stop as well — no matter which direction you are driving.
Rae says now is a great time for parents to review safety procedures with kids.
She says this includes lessons on crossing the street, as well as never getting into a car with strangers.
