The Chair of the Federal Agriculture and Agri Food committee is pleased with the response a nationwide tour generated from young farmers.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP Larry Miller says he was surprised at the level of optimism the young farmers expressed about the future of agriculture and also surprised about some of the concerns they raised.
He says the major concern many of the farmers told the committee surrounded the availability of low interest rate loans to either purchase their first farm, new equipment or expand their operation.
Miller also says the whole issue of profitability also was a major worry of young farmers who fear they will not get a good return on their investment and never to able to make a profit.
He also says he was surprised by the number of farmers who wanted to see the elimination of a number of farm programs they feel just are not working on a nation wide basis.
Miller says the only ones they wanted kept would be those that acted like disaster relief programs during a crisis.
He is hoping that the committee can put together its report in about a week or so and then he can table it in the Commons by mid June.
Miller says after that, the report will go to the Agriculture minister for follow up.
