Saugeen Shores residents can now add another item to their blue boxes.
Councillor — and Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling board member — Fred Schildroth recently held his annual recycling challenge with his council colleagues.
Council was asked to decide if any of the common product containers on display are not allowed in the blue box.
The twist this year was that all the aerosol cans, paint cans, glass jars, and plastic jugs are allowed – and so are some new items.
Schildroth says up until now they have not been able to accept what are called spiral boxboard containers.
The category includes Pringles chip tubes, some new coffee containers, and Ajax and Comet containers – anything with a metal top and bottom and a cardboard body.
A new system has been developed that can take cardboard and metal together.
Schildroth says his recycling challenge was especially important this year because it helps him spread the word about the new rules on spiral boxboard containers.
He says the brochures that show residents the blue box rules are printed too far ahead of time and do not have the new items on the ‘allowed’ list.
Schildroth says if anyone has questions about the change they can visit the website www.brucerecycling.com or call 519-797-5557.
