The science fair project which created a stir in Walkerton has earned a bronze medal at the Canada Wide Science Fair.
Megan Schlorff’s ‘Unearthing the Elements of Truth’ project detected levels of uranium in Walkerton’s municipal water.
It finished third at the National fair in Peterborough last week.
Schlorff also found significantly higher levels of uranium in the hair samples of the Walkerton residents tested compared to Hanover residents.
Schlorff’s project also tested for radon gas in both Walkerton and Hanover.
Of the 20 households tested — four Walkerton homes presented levels above the Health Canada guidelines.
Schlorff says she is concerned about radon gas because it’s the second leading cause of lung cancer.
Overall Schlorff says her project isn’t intended to cause panic — but rather make people aware of the different environmental factors that can impact health.
This was Schlorff’s 5th Canada Wide Science Fair competition.
Over the years — she has won 5 gold medals, a bronze and 28 thousand dollars in scholarship funds.
However because some of the scholarships are attached to certain universities she won’t be able to cash all of them in.
Meanwhile Arran Tara Elementary grade 7 student Loral Christie brought home a silver and an astronomy award in her division.
Bruce Peninsula District grade 9 student Josie Mielhausen also earned an honourable mention.
