A decision to take a little more time has been reached in Southgate.
Council had recently met to discuss the future of the Old Library building in the heart of Dundalk as the new library building opened on June 1st.
Council was toying with the idea to either keep the property and lease to some interested community groups – or sell the building outright to save capital expenses.
Deputy Mayor Brian Milne says the decision is basically buy more time to make the decision.
Milne says they will approach the groups interested in leasing the building for some more information about services they would offer from the building – such as the early years program and the county social services.
Milne says if the council just looks at dollars and cents it makes more sense to sell the building outright.
On the other hand – he adds – the services that could be offered out of the building may be more worthwhile to the community on the whole than just monetary funds.
Milne says reports indicate it will take about 8-thousand dollars to keep the building up and running.
Milne says – speaking for himself – it seems good to keep the building ownership as there is a genuine need in the community for the services that could be offered out of the building.
He adds that the location – in the centre of Dundalk – is excellent for the services as it is in walking distance for many residents.
Milne says council will revisit the issue in a few weeks time once they review what the community groups present to them.
