The Saugeen Conservation Authority is taking a pass on solar power for the time being.
The Authority was considering whether to spend money to purchase its own solar panels, or lease out some of its property to a private company to install its own solar power panels.
Authority Chair Doug Freiburger says in the end the board decided that at this time its just too risky an investment for the Authority to make with public money.
He says they also heard from other solar power producers that they are just not getting the returns they were promised, so with that in mind the authority decided it was not in the best interest to make that move.
The Authority was considering the solar option as a way to generate additional revenue by selling the power they produced back to the province.
However Freiburger says considering the initial expense of obtaining the equipment, and the length of time to pay off that cost, the proposal just did not make any economic senses.
The authority was considering this extra income to help pay for operating the Authorities new headquarters building Formosa.
Freiburger says the deal to purchase that building should close in a few weeks perhaps by mid June, and they could then begin construction of a new addition.
The current owners of the building will remain there until the fall when their new building is complete, and then the Authority will move from its current location south of Hanover to its new headquarters in Formosa.
