Things have been steady for staff at the Wasaga Beach Provincial Park.
That’s according to park superintendent John Fisher, who says that there has been a steady stream of enforcement issues they have had to deal with as well.
He says the May 24 long weekend really isn’t a revenue generating weekend for the park, and their focus is more towards looking for where potential impacts may be in terms of youth on the beach, who are vulnerable after dark.
Fisher says most issues so far have been minor – namely drinking on the beach.
He says officers will dump out the alcohol, and may lay charges too.
Fisher says that officers have told him the youth seem to be fairly young, and not very resistant, which is a good thing, because that avoids any unnecessary situation.
He says that park warden officers also have the same powers as the OPP if they’re inside the provincial park, so they can arrest people under Ontario legislation.
Fisher says the increase in people isn’t giving them any trouble though, and things are going well.
He says that if the weather is good, the beach will always be busy, and Fisher says his staff is looking forward to lots of good weather this summer too.
Fisher says they don’t yet have any numbers, but adds that because the last few years have been cold and wet, this year shouldn’t be as slow.
