It was exactly 10 years ago that Walkerton was hit by a tainted water tragedy that left seven people dead and 25-hundred ill.
The event began at the now defunct Well 5 — where cow manure washed into the town’s water system after heavy rains in 2000.
A public inquiry blamed it on sloppy oversight and weak rules.
The town’s water manager Colin Saunders says the disaster in May 2000 sparked positive changes in drinking-water oversight.
Today, Ontario’s chief drinking water inspector, John Stager, says the province is a recognized leader when it comes to tap-water safety.
Still, environmentalists note there are currently 435 boil-water advisories in effect across Ontario.
