Grey County is doing what it can to help renters purchase their own home.
Grey County has extended the Affordable Housing Homeownership program — a provincial program administered by the County.
County councillor and Southgate Deputy Mayor Brian Milne says it provides a 5 per cent down payment on a home for qualified individuals.
Milne says its a forgivable loan and the County has been given 100-thousand dollars to disperse.
The qualifications include a combined household income no more than 55-thousand dollars and the home of interest must be no more than 170-thousand dollars.
Milne says the difference between this phase and the last one is this time — the home does not have to be brand new — which opens up more opportunities.
Milne says the program gives people a stake in the community and a pride in ownership — and it makes for a better community when people own their property.
The Homeownership program started back in 2008 and since then — Grey County has helped 35 renters buy homes.
More information can be obtained by contacting Grey County offices.
Milne stresses its first come first served basis and once the money runs out — even before the December deadline — the program will stop.
