About three dozen people turned out Sunday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the E. coli disaster in Walkerton.
The event began at the now defunct Well 5 — where cow manure washed into the town’s water system after heavy rains in 2000.
The speakers — including Brockton Mayor Charlie Bagnato — remembered the consequences after the storm — seven people died and 25 hundred others fell ill.
Bagnato says it is important to remember that people lost their lives drinking tap water in a town in Canada.
But Bagnato also noted how far Walkerton has come since the tragedy.
He points to the growing industrial park — which includes the world renowned Clean Water Centre which has provided education to thousands of people responsible for providing clean drinking water.
Those taking part in a memorial walk yesterday — some of whom were terribly sick at the time — said they came out to pay their respects.
