The Saugeen Shores landfill will be home to the Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling facility for another 10 years.
Director of Public Works Bill Jones says the town has signed a new lease agreement with the company as the last one is expiring.
In 1990 Saugeen Shores and BASWR entered into a 20 year lease for 2 acres of land at landfill – for only 2 dollars total.
Under the new 10 year lease, BASWR will pay the town 5 thousand dollars per year for a total of 50 thousand dollars.
Jones says BASWR does use some town services at the landfill such as the scales to weigh the trucks.
He says the money recouped for the use of the land will help cover maintenance of those services and other things such as snow removal.
Jones says both sides are very pleased with the terms of the new agreement.
Jones says the facility has been located in Saugeen Shores since BASWR’s inception and the town sees many benefits.
They get rent on their land, jobs are provided locally, and it’s just handy to have the recycling facility in their own back yard to help with diversion programs.
BASWR is comprised of 7 Bruce County municipalities but the Saugeen Shores facility is their only sorting and storage facility.
